POWERFUL CHURCH
The Holy Spirit arrives on earth in power.
Dunamis =Power/ anointing (HS) (Acts 2: 1-13)
Jesus leaves disciples with authority.
Exousia=Authority (NN) Mk 16: 16-18
Peter preaches the gospel of Power citing the prophecy from the Old Testament prophet Joel.
(Acts 2: 17-21)
“Daughters shall prophesy, Young men shall see visions; old men shall dream dreams. Holy Spirit shall be poured out on servants and handmaidens and they shall prophesy. There will be also signs in heaven and in the earth, sun and moon before the Lord’s return”.
Peter explains why the people appear to be drunk. These are manifestations of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Falling down, healings, prophesy, staggering under the power of God, Shaking,
Peter explains that this same Jesus whom the Jews crucified, God has raised up and made him both Lord and Christ! (v36). Then he calls for repentance and baptism for the remission of sins to prepare to receive the Baptism (gift and promise) of the Holy Ghost! (v.38-39)
Now the people continued in the doctrine of the apostles and taking communion to remember the Lord’s death. Wonders and sign were done by the apostles. The people sold their possessions to provide for all who had need. The church began to grow.
Peter heals a cripple at the gate. (Acts 3:1-6)
Peter and John are delivered supernaturally from prison. (Acts 4:13,19, Acts 5:32,39,41)
-Attitude of church is rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
-Stephen preaches and is martyred. (Acts 7:51-resistance to Holy Spirit)
Acts 4:29-35. Believers are filled with the Holy Spirit, sold their houses & distributed to the brethren.
Acts 8. Paul is converted from enemy to preacher of gospel. He separated himself unto God distanced himself from religion and was prepared by the Holy Spirit for his apostleship to the gentiles.
Phillip preaches in Samaria with miracles. (Acts 8:6) Peter and John arrive to deliver power of Holy Ghost and confront Simon the Sorcerer. (Acts 8:14-20)Philip is caught away in the spirit. (Acts 8:39)
Peter raises a dead girl (Acts 9:40). God warns Peter not to call unclean what God has cleansed. (Acts 10:15) All apostles agreed that Gentiles are receiving the power of the Holy Ghost and none should forbid them this their inheritance.(Acts 10:44-47, 11:9, 16,
Gospel goes out to the Gentiles. Acts. 13:46
1 Cor. 2:4 Paul preaches and teaches kingdom with demonstration of power. (dunamis)
Paul departed from Athens and came to Corinth. Met and joined with Priscilla and Aquila who were fellow craftsmen in the business of “tent making”. (Acts 18:3)
The church is growing and others are joining Paul in spreading the gospel. The church is beginning to grow and understand how to walk in power, believing in salvation by Jesus through grace. In Corinth this couple helps Paul in the ministry.
Not all accept the supernatural works of God. Many only knew the baptism of John. The Jews continued to “oppose themselves” (2 Tim 2:25 & Acts 18:6) The Lord Jesus encourages Paul to not be afraid although the Jews rise up against him, he is not alone in the Lord’s work. He stayed with them 1 year and 6 months. Teaching, encouraging, convincing and persuading with the scriptures.
God steps into the circumstances. The government officials refused to allow the Jews to prevail and the Greeks fought back. (v17)
Paul left them there and departed for Syria, Ephesus, Caesarea and Antioch. He was NOW “strengthening all the disciples” (v.23)
Apollos was a Baptist preacher but Priscilla and Aquila saw his love for the gospel and brought to him more understanding of this gospel of power. (v26) Example of gifts working thru this couple
Paul found more disciples and asked them with what baptism are you baptized? (Acts 19:3-7)
These few (12) took the gospel in power to others.
Paul continued to teach the KINGDOM of God in power and the Lord wrought special miracles through Paul so that his body itself was filled with power that could be sent through handkerchiefs (cloths) to heal sick and deliver people from evil spirits. (Acts 19: 10-12)
God knows those who are His and what we are doing in our lives. He also knows those who only come in selfish ambition for personal gain. V.13-16) God is Lord of the hearts of men. (v.19) Many people were delivered of witchcraft, idolatry and wrong thinking as they surrendered to God their hearts and their books and turned away from these things.
Authority (exousia) We must use our authority. Mt. 8:1-17 There is unbelief in the church. Speak but your Word. Believe His Word is enough. Some of the children are cast into outer darkness because of unbelief. Weepin and gnashing of teeth. V. 17- Healing is in the atonement. Jesus took my diseases and bare my sicknesses.
What happened to the power of the early church? Jude. Certain men crept in unawares and told them it was OK to do things in the natural. They were sensual and natural with love of money. Clouds without water, without the spirit,but you PRAY IN THE SPIRIT. Jude 19-21! Warning!
